Managing Attorney, Stephen R. Miller

Stephen R. Miller is the managing attorney at Coalition Legal and specializes in litigating cases involving public sector liability, civil rights, employment discrimination, construction and general liability in both state and federal court. He has tried dozens of civil jury cases to verdict and is a peer-elected member of the exclusive Society of Trial Lawyers, an organization of the most accomplished trial attorneys in the City of Chicago. Stephen is a graduate of Northwestern University and the University of Michigan Law School.

Attorney, Kathryn Vanden Berk

Kathryn M. Vanden Berk, an attorney at and founder of Coalition Legal, has specialized in the field of non-profit law for her entire legal career.  She has been legal counsel to a wide range of exempt organizations including charitable, religious, scientific and educational clients, trade associations and public and private foundations.  She is a chapter author of IICLE’s Not-for-Profit Corporation Attorney’s Handbook, a workshop leader of the ISBE’s Annual Non-profit Law Update,  and a former officer or board member of the Youth Conservation Corps, HACES (Hispanic American Community and Education Services), Friends for Health and other groups. She has been a credentialled member of the MCLE Board since 2005 and is the former Board Chair and Managing Attorney of the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic in Highland Park, Illinois. Kathryn graduated with Distinction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she majored in Journalism, and obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School.

Volunteer Paralegal, Sherrell I. Reed

Sherrell Reed is a certified paralegal who recently retired from 20 plus years of military service with the United States Navy. She was Law Office Manager for the U.S. Sending Office in Italy and is currently stationed at Great Lakes Naval Station in North Chicago, where she is responsible for a range of legal administrative duties. She is in charge of processing the 4,000 incoming and outgoing sailors on base and performs additional duties as an administrative law judge for cases involving discipline and separation of enlistees. She has a Judge Advocate General Corps (JAGC) Knowledge Management Qualification (KMQ) and a secret security clearance. Sherrell earned a bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Maryland and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Human Resource Development, with an emphasis on Management and Leadership, from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri.
